You feel tired all the time. Your hair is falling more than usual. You’ve gained weight even though you haven’t changed your diet. Or maybe the opposite — you feel jittery, your heart races, and you can’t seem to sleep. Many women silently live with these symptoms for months, even years, blaming stress or “getting older.”
The real culprit could be your thyroid.
The thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland in your neck, but it controls an enormous amount of your body’s daily functioning — your metabolism, energy levels, mood, hair growth, menstrual cycle, and even fertility. When this gland misbehaves, it sends ripple effects throughout your body. And in India, thyroid disorders are far more common in women than in men — studies suggest women are 5 to 8 times more likely to develop thyroid problems.
The good news? A simple blood test can tell you everything you need to know.
What Does the Thyroid Actually Do?
Your thyroid gland produces hormones — primarily T3 (triiodothyronine) and T4 (thyroxine) — that regulate how fast or slow your body’s cells work. The pituitary gland in your brain monitors thyroid hormone levels and sends signals using TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) to tell the thyroid when to produce more or less.
When the thyroid produces too little hormone, it’s called hypothyroidism — the “slow thyroid.” When it produces too much, it’s called hyperthyroidism — the “overactive thyroid.” Both conditions are treatable, but only if you know they’re there.
Signs That You Should Get Your Thyroid Tested
Thyroid disorders are sneaky because their symptoms often look like everyday problems. Here are signs you should not ignore:
Signs of Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid):
- Persistent fatigue and sluggishness, even after a full night’s sleep
- Unexplained weight gain
- Feeling cold all the time
- Dry skin, brittle nails, and hair fall
- Depression or low mood
- Irregular or heavy periods
- Constipation
- Brain fog and difficulty concentrating
Signs of Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid):
- Unexplained weight loss despite a normal appetite
- Rapid heartbeat or palpitations
- Anxiety, nervousness, or irritability
- Excessive sweating and feeling hot
- Trembling hands
- Trouble sleeping
- Lighter or missed periods
If you recognise two or more of these symptoms, it’s worth getting a thyroid test. Many women are surprised to discover their “normal” tired feeling was actually a thyroid problem in disguise.
Which Thyroid Tests Should Women Get?
- TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone): The primary screening test. A high TSH usually means hypothyroidism; a low TSH often indicates hyperthyroidism.
- Free T3 and Free T4: Measure the actual thyroid hormones in your bloodstream, giving a clearer picture of gland function.
- Anti-TPO Antibodies: Checks whether your immune system is attacking your thyroid — a condition called Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, the most common cause of hypothyroidism in women.
No special preparation is needed. You do not need to fast. A simple blood draw is all it takes, and results are usually ready within a few hours.
When Is Thyroid Testing Especially Important?
Before and During Pregnancy: Undetected thyroid problems can lead to miscarriage, preterm birth, and developmental issues in the baby. Doctors often recommend thyroid testing as part of preconception planning.
After Childbirth: Postpartum thyroiditis affects roughly 5–10% of women after delivery and is often mistaken for postpartum depression.
PCOS and Irregular Periods: Thyroid dysfunction and PCOS can overlap and worsen each other. Women with PCOS should routinely check their thyroid levels.
Around Perimenopause and Menopause: Hormonal changes can mask or mimic thyroid symptoms, making testing the only reliable way to distinguish between them.
Family History: If a parent or sibling has a thyroid condition, your risk is significantly higher.
How Often Should You Get Tested?
With no symptoms and no risk factors, a thyroid profile once every 2–3 years is a reasonable preventive measure after age 30. If you have symptoms, a family history, or an existing thyroid condition, your doctor may recommend annual or more frequent testing.
